So you want to make money from home? You totally want to hustle but you can’t leave your kids? Are you looking for ways to earn money that don’t involve scams, pyramid schemes, or pennies on the dollar work? Us too!
The good news is that there are tons of ways to hustle hard while also watching the baby nap, throwing a load of laundry in, and being home to meet the school bus. Here are some of our favorites.
How to Make Money from Home
1. Be a virtual assistant.
Anyone who has even the most basic technical skills can be a VA. Can you edit? Can you create content? Can you make memes? What about writing someone else’s thank you cards or social media posts? There are jobs for all of those things out there.
The best way to find them is to reach out to your networks. Put all those thousands of Facebook friends or LinkedIn contacts to work! Think about who you know that has more money than time and reach out to them first. Often there are small projects you can do in a few hours and get paid right away.
2. Sell something.
While this may not get you rich or pay your mortgage this month, if you can sell something you own, you might be able to make some fast money. We like using Facebook Marketplace and selling to people we know or with whom we have friends in common. It’s just safer that way.
Name-brand, quality, kids’ items tend to sell fast. If you are trying to figure out how to make money from home, it might be as easy as doing some decluttering.
3. Babysit.
While we get that you aren’t a 14-year-old girl, babysitting is still a viable option for you. Moms adore having other moms watch their kids. Plus, when you have kids at home anyway, it’s no trouble to pack double.
This is one of those ways to earn money from home that can be a Godsend to someone else. While there are rules and laws that govern running a daycare center out of your home, you can help out another family with occasional babysitting (in your house or theirs).
4. Tutor/Coach.
What are you an expert at? Can you teach piano? Chess? Basketball? Are you totally adept at today’s “new” math or reading comprehension topics? Help other parents by taking something off their plate.
Think about offering to do the nightly reading for a family with multiple kids or supervise homework for a parent who otherwise couldn’t get to it until after 6pm. Neighborhood websites, moms groups or even old school bulletin boards are the place to offer these services. When trying to figure out how to make money from home, chatting with your friends to see what services they need may be your first step.
5. Be a freelance writer.
While this sounds fancy, being a freelance writer just means someone paid you something you wrote. If you have any writing skills, this may be an easy money stream to tap into. And you don’t have to write for the New York Times. Start with the blogs you read regularly, local magazines that get dropped in your mailbox, or businesses that have a blog that needs updating.
Start by asking people you know. Then be sure to cast a wide net so you can hopefully get several clients to write for on a regular basis. The biggest thing you have to make sure to do is to under-promise and over-deliver. Turn things in on time. Follow directions. Look for ways to offer more value and distinguish yourself from other writers.
To be honest, maybe the real question is not how to make money at home, but which way is best for YOU to make money from home. There are some pretty simple steps you can take today to find the best income stream for you.
Inventory your skills. Figure out what makes you energized. Talk to friends and contacts. You got this! Hustle hard!
